It happened around August 5, 1977. Brian Jones claimed he had been attacked behind a rural Stilwell residence by a large and hairy creature. The creature had attempted to gain entry to the home via a screen. When Jones went out to check out “strange noises” he was attacked. Local authorities responded—along with OSBI investigators. They collected the boy’s shredded shirt and various trace hair samples for later lab analysis (the hair results were inconclusive). State officials would later claim Jones’ story was “just a hoax,” despite a number of other key witnesses that seemed to back up Jones’ version of events. Ironically—just across the nearby adjacent Arkansas border, a second incident involving a “similar creature” followed only days later. This one could not be so easily explained away, as Arkansas deputies found unusual claws marks beginning “7 to 8 feet up” on nearby tree trunks by a farmer’s milk house that “something big” had attempted to access. “Whatever it was, it was definitely not a bear,” county officials concluded. “We don’t know what it was…but it wasn’t a bear.”
