Sighting Type: 3
Summary: ODOR
Sighting Text:
CA TR17* Shannon Howe told me of a tale (in news #15, page 3-4) of his dad, Larry Howe, and he brought dad into the shop. The first hand report was very similar. To recap; in 1982 (erroneously 1976 in #15), Larry was horse packing near Chain Lake, outside of Lonepine in Calif. They had a 125# white German shepard along that was normally very obedient. The dog was strangely very protective at night, going from one sleeping bag to the next. The next morning the dog ran off chasing after something that smelled very bad...a musky stench. They were worried about the dog, but it eventually came back unharmed. Larry spent 18 years as a movie stunt man and has been in the "Fall Guy," and "Breakout.-

Summary: 14-15 IN TRACKS, DERMAL RIDGES PRESENT, TOES SPLAYED
Sighting Text:
CA FRESNO 1995 TR#84 37 07N 119 04W * BFRO report. Witness and several friends were 65 miles east of Fresno, CA, on the Swamp Lake 4-wheel drive route, in the Sierra NF at 8000 ft. Late September, 1995, about 7 AM, temperature was about 30 degrees. Witness was riding mountain bike on swamp route, friends riding 3-5 minutes away. As he ascended trail heard a large animal moving in the forest some 20 yards off the trail. Couldn’t see but could clearly hear it in the underbrush. On up the trail, one of my friends was in the trail looking at a very large set of footprints, about 200 yards from where he heard the noises. The tracks had come on the trail and proceeded down it about 30-50 yards. It appeared to walk a few steps, stop and stand still, then move a few more feet, as if it had stopped and was listening. It went down the trail a few more yards than headed into a small meadow near where I had heard noises in the brush. The tracks were very deep in silty powder and were well detailed. Lines in the sole of the foot were visible and the toes were splayed, there was little or no arch present. Tracks were about 14-15 inches, witness could fit whole shoe into track. The tracks were laid down on top of the trail of my friends bike, who was about five minutes ahead of me. A couple of bear hunters came along and we asked what they thought...they had never seen such a track. A half mile up the road the tracks appeared again, moving across the road and going downhill towards the previous site of prints. The bear hunters had also found the tracks and followed, but lost them in thick brush. The jeep trail runs close to the Dinkey Lakes Wilderness area. This area of pine forest has granite outcrops and a small creek off the trail, a tributary of Ruby Creek, with a small meadow. Witness again says elevation is around 8000 feet with a question mark.

Summary: VOCALIZATION, TALKING BACKWARDS ENGLISH
Sighting Text:
* BFRO report. In Feb, 1995 about 11PM, full moon, sounds were heard at Huntington Lake, CA by five people sitting on lawn chairs (there was no fire). In the distance a loud howl was heard, seemingly coming from miles away, the dogs across the lake started barking. Witness thought bear had been hit by car. But 3 or 4 howls later of 15 second duration and echoing around the walls of the valley, not sure what it was. Then there were sounds of perhaps of "somebody talking backward English" through a megaphone. This lasted about five minutes, but none of the "words" could be understood. This time we thought perhaps a crew was hunting for the creature that made the first howls. The lake was frozen and there were about three feet of snow on the ground. Elevation7000ft.

Summary: 6.5 FT DARK BF SEEN, 16 IN TRACKS
Sighting Text:
TR33 Mike Jay report, 11/19/93. September 15 or 16, 1990, 1:00 PM, about 20 miles NE of Willows, CA (on I- 5 north of Sacramento). Witness was Jon Purcell, 40, an industria1 mechanic from Springfield, OR. Jon said he was being escorted on a walking tour of a remote corner of a friend's property, when he and his companions, the owners, heard semi-automatic gunfire, apparently coming from the leeward side of a nearby hill, just out of their line of sight. Fearing that some of the friend's free-ranging cattle were being shot by persons unknown, the trio returned to their parked jeep to retrieve their own weapons, then began ascending the hill to investigate. The men, walking several yards abreast, were 2/3's of the way to the top of the 60 foot slope when, informant says, a large, hairy upright biped suddenly burst into view through the scrub-oak cover and ran towards them at a tremendous speed, passing between the first two men at a distance of less than 20 yards and actually "brushing" the informant as it leapt by, allowing the startled man a split-second, but nonetheless, eye-to-eye view. Informant describes a creature approximately 6'5", 450-500 pounds, very heavy, muscular, "weightlifters' " build, exceptionally long arms and legs, completely covered with hair, except for face, with 2 1/2-3 inch coarse dark (thought to be black or very dark brown) hair. He also describes a "short, powerful" neck, a pointed or "crowned" head with a receding (sloped) forehead; small flat ears, a semi-prognatious, "half-human, half ape" face with extremely deepset dark round eyes, a large flat nose, flaring nostrils, and large, square, yellowish human-like teeth. Creature was only in view a matter of seconds as it ran past the group, bounded down the slope and disappeared in heavy brush before the witnesses could react. Informant estimates that it ran "2 to 3 times faster" than a man. He is quite clear, however, on what he believes he and the others saw. Informant further states that after recovering their wits the party proceeded to the presumed location of the gunshots and found no other humans present, but did discover muddy vibram bootprints and several discarded 7.62 NATO (.308 WCF) cartridge cases, leading to speculation that the creature observed was frightened by"the gunfire and/or actually being shot at at the time of the occurrence. Six tracks of five-toes imprints 16 inches long were examined. Odor not noticed, when the creature passed. The sketch on the cover of this issue is a drawing of the Purcell creature, described to artist Terry Ring, who gives his permission to reproduce.

Sighting Text:
CA HUMBOLDT 1934 TR#76 * Dr. Jim Karl, April 5, 1998. I was talking with a neighbor of my dad. She was born in 1915 and was raised on a farm in northern California. She is one of the nicest, most wholesome little old ladies that I've run across. Her husband had a PhD in physics and worked on the Manhattan project, and two of her sons are medical doctors. She was telling me that she had seen Bigfoot prints near Humboldt, CA, in 1934, and that the local newspaper had printed a number of articles over the years, pre-dating the nation-wide news frenzy in 1958 with the Bluff Creek footprints. There seems to be a lot of interest in the history of Bigfoot sightings, and it would seem that, if local newspaper records in Humboldt County could be found, some very old sightings would be there. It would be interesting to know what they called the creatures back then.

Summary: TRACKS

Rowland, that had a camp near an old collapsed tin cabin. One night there was a terrible smell and the creature dashed across the tin, “rattle rattle rattle.” The next morning dents were found in the tin where something large had stepped.
