Data Source: TR 63 JAN 97

Locality: Noatak River
Researcher: Peter Bostrum
Witness: Fran Krogstad

Sighting Type: 2
Summary: BF TRACK IN MUD NEXT TO RIVER

Sighting Text:
(Letter to Peter Bostrum) December 18th, '96 Pete: On September 18th of this year, a friend and I went looking for caribou up on the Noatak River. We took a half hour ride at about thirty miles an hour to get to a point Where the mountains were. We stopped at the foot of a small mountain where the carbou trail was cut into the grounds by thousands of caribou hooves. This is up on the Northwest coast of Alaska. If you can find Nome, Alaska on the map, we are 200 miles exactly north of there, on the Chuckchi sea. We, the Eskimo people, have cultural stories of this "bigfoot man" that go way back several generations. The stories are usually of the "big people" who "come at night" out in the country, or "at camp". So its safe to say that this creature has been in this part of the world a long time. But no one has ever documented signs of it through casts or photography. We live in a very isolated area where we used to live off the land. That meant we had to spend quite a bit of time out in the country. Back then, we Eskimo's had no need for photographic equipment. Food was the main reason they were out in the country. We cannot just walk down the street and ask another Eskimo if he has some plaster of Paris handy. To find plaster, we have to fly 600 miles to a metropolitan area: in south central Alaska. 1st photo: 11 a.m. Sept 18 We had climbed a small cliff that was along a riverbank to see what we could find with binoculars on the caribou trail. We sat there for about an hour then came down the cliff through a different route. The 6riginal route was about ten feet away from this one. My partner was behind me and came down still farther away. By the time I was in the boat, he had stopped and was looking at !he ground. He called me over and asked me "what the hell’s. this?" When I got to it, I could clearly see that it was an outline of some kind of footprint. It was really obvious because the fall leaves had filled the footprint completely and it stood out. Orangey leaves on grey mud. With a willow sticking out of it. So we carefully took the leaves out of the print and I immediately understood what this was. I went back to the boat and got my Pentax K-2 camera and took this picture. The outside air temp was about 30 degrees, which made the mud where the print is quite hard. Whatever made this footprint had made it the evening before when the mud was still soft, between 6 pm and 6 am. This was my personal guess. I had left the willow there in the picture because I thought it was rooted there. This footprint was about two feet away from the water, on a small shelf of mud on the bank. 2nd photo: Same time Realizing the importance of this find, I got a pencil from my toolbox and laid it under the willow for comparison. This is a regular size pencil, just like the orange Faber pencils that school kids use. I had moved the willow a bit to get the pencil under it without sticking it into the mud. 3rd photo: Same time The picture looks dark because both my friend and I were directly over the footprint. I had to put the camera quite low to get as much texture as possible and for size comparison with his hand. The willow was again moved by myself. 4th photo: Same day 5 hours later 4 pm After we had left the footprint and moved about 5 miles farther north, I realized that I had not measured the track! So, while we still had a lot of daylight and not much luck with caribou, we went back to it for more pictures. By this time the temp was about 45 degrees, with the sun shining right on the track. That’s when the willow was removed. By this time, the tracks walls had already started to thaw and fall apart. Just prior to leaving the area, I felt that we should not be the only ones to talk of this finding. I felt that no one was going to believe us. There was another guy hunting in the same area, so we waited for him to come down from the caribou trails. I made sure he went over and saw the track in the mud. I had my friend deliberately bring the other hunter around the track so that he would come down to face it with a view from the top of the riverbank. His first words? what is that?" 5th photo: Same time as fourth photo The caribou pass through this area every fall and have done so for a very long time. No one has to go more than ten miles with a boat to hunt. About ten days prior to this finding, my cousin had gone on his own hunting trip. He had gone to a closer area which was nothing but flat grassy land with a lot of bare mud all along the riverside. Sorta like a hundred baseball fields in large area with spots of wild grass. I had asked him about his hunt after I took these pictures. I asked him what he had seen~ He told me "a few caribou but nothing worth working for." I ask him again what else he saw. He said "Oh, nothing much." I pressured him further since I was trying to gather my inner thoughts about a feeling I had. He then said, "Oh yeah, some dumb 5uy walking around with no shoes!" I had hit pay dirt. I asked him what he meant by that. He said that "some big guy without any boots had followed the caribou tracks on the mud." I asked him how big the tracks were. He wore a size 9 1/2 shoe and he said "I could put my shoe in that track and still have leftover." I then asked him if he realized what he had found. Then I pulled these pictures out and showed him. He was amazed. He then mentioned that it was pretty cold to be walking around without any boots. Sept 25th: one week later I had the opportunity to go back to the caribou trail again since the ice had not yet frozen in the river. This time I was on the "lookout for Bigfoot." We went back to the same cliff for a cursory look and then went about a mile farther north to a portage. I walked back through the portage trail to see if I could find any caribou coming from the mountain trails to the river. On my way back I started looking at the tundra and terrain at my feet. I hit pay dirt again! I had walked directly across a whole set of big footprints on my way to the portage trail! I had not paid much attention while I was on my way UP the trail because I had caribou meat on my mind. These footprints were walking along the bank of the river for about 200 feet. Along side these tracks were fresh tracks of moose AND bear. What more could you want for comparison!? The stride was roughly between 3-4 feet. The Bigfoot track were the same depth as the moose tracks but it was obvious what they were. It was beautiful. The bear tracks were closer along the riverbank, and they were quite distinguishable as bear, with claw marks and all. As I followed the footprints, I came across a clump of grass. Right there next to that clump of grass was a single small piece of some kind of feces. I had gloves on so I naturally picked it up and looked at it. It was about 4 1/2 inches long, and about an inch and a half in diameter It had no smell other than the normal earth smell. It was quite light. It did not look like it had any seeds or anything like that. The texture was exactly like the texture of porcupine, rabbit, caribou, or moose droppings. But...in this one piece, were many smaller formed pieces that made up the whole. Like if you gathered up a bunch of smaller droppings and molded them together like you might with clay. If you broke the single piece of feces apart, each individual part would show. I thought to myself, "This guys must have a slow digestive tract." And like a stoopid fool, I set it down back on the ground, and went to bring my partner up to see what I had found. We followed the tracks for a bit and came back through a slightly different route. We got in the boat, and went hunting for caribou. By the time I realized that I had left the feces sample, we were too far and nearly home. It was going to get dark up here in the northern country. I had wanted dearly to take home that feces sample to some kind of lab who could analyze it. The local Fish and Game biologists was very interested. About the feeling I had. With some reports of Bigfoot, some people report a very foul smell or odor. You know what has a foul smell when you go out hunting for animals in the deer family? The stomach contents. The greens that are fermenting on the bowels. This Bigfoot that was leaving tracks up here is following, exactly, the caribou trails. Wherever we gut a caribou, I have a practice of separating the stomachs contents for the other animals to feet on. What if Bigfoot was scarfing up this stuff and gorging on it. We as Eskimos would understand it. We ferment greens. we ferment fish, we ferment meal we eat it. But we clean up after. No smell. Bigfoot is out in the country and has no need to use the basin when he is done. This area where Bigfoot has left his track is prime country. Gods country. Just like Oregon and Washington, and Montana and Colorado. Mountains, lots of trees, lots of plants, lots of food. What if Bigfoot eats as much as he can to hibernate? If Bigfoot traveled south as the winter approached, wouldn't the number of sightings increase as they all moved south. Well, that doesn't seem to happen up here at all. We have mountains where there are caves. What if they hibernated this far north? About a week after I took these pictures, another friend of mine who travels the Kobuk River mentioned this to me. He said that he was coming home through the river just when it was starting to get dark. The river runs alongside a series of small bluffs. At night if you are traveling east, the sky would outline the bluffs tops as you went by. Just an outline would show. Well, he said that as he was coming home, he saw a "guy standing way up on the top of the bluff". So he naturally waved to the guy. But the guy just stood there watching him as he passed in his boat. Five minutes downriver he thought to himself" I don't remember seeing a boat parked there. Neither was there a campsite near there." He thought nothing of it until l showed him these pictures. 1992 September 5 miles south of town on coast Three 17-18 year aids were driving along the hillside near the beach. Pitch black, sun had gone down three hours earlier. It was about midnight. They came around a slight curve in the beach road and the lights shone on a piece of heavy equipment that was sitting there alongside the road. This was a bucket loader. The driver made an abrupt stop when they came close to the loader There sitting on top the loader was a "big hairy guy". The loaders top of the cabin is roughly ten feet off the ground. One of the kids said He just jumped right off the loader onto the road and stared at us," By this time the girl that was in the vehicle started falling apart and crying. Thats when the other passenger started banging on the dash and told the driver to "get out of here'" I asked the two males who saw the "guy" and asked them how tall he was. They both came to the agreement of about seven feet. 1992 September 2 weeks later A Cessna 402 airplane was flying between Noorvik and Selawik, over a pass in the mountains in that area. One of the passengers was watching the ground as it went by. Suddenly she saw what looked like a "really big guy just walking in the pass." She made her husband aware and asked him "what’s that big guy doing down there in the middle of nowhere?" (This area is roughly twenty miles from where we found this track.) With this finding, I am going to be ready for next fall. I do plan to have some plaster in the boat this time. There is a great interest by the local public in my pictures. Many have suggested that I make them available to the media. I have chosen not to simply because the numbers of those who understand are far outnumbered by those who scoff. We are so isolated way up here at the top of Alaska where the summers can reach 95 degrees above and go down to 50 below in the winter. But they are - available for those who are interested. Do what you want with the pictures, I consider myself an amateur when it comes by Fran Krogstad

Sighting Text:
TR 82 OCT 1998 Roy Mendenhall, Oct 30, 1998. From mister@ptialaska.net This is the Alaskan Eskimo subscriber from Kotzebue, Alaska. Sorry to have been keeping a low profile since last fall. Bigfoot is still in this region above the Arctic Circle. Last fall, 90 miles East of here, near a village called Selawik, a pair of Bigfeet were spotted at the city dump by many people. One of the creatures was small. The people there at Selawik say that the creatures have a high sing-song voice that they definitely heard. A few weeks before that, a hunter who had quartered a moose and hung it up to dry overnight found all the ribs missing the next morning. Nothing else was gone. The hunter sez that he could not understand why the meatier parts like hind quarters and shoulders were left alone. He thought that it was very strange for a "bear" to take only the ribs. He could not find any bears tracks either. Roy Mendenhall, POB 341 Kotzebue, AK 99752

I did not have the creepy feeling I normally get in these situations... so I really do not know what to make of it.

One detail I forgot to mention: the whoop had almost a human like talk after it on both occasions.
